E-mail is the best thing since sliced peaches (cold, with sugar on them).

I’m in the middle of a job search, and in the past — well within my professional lifetime, much less my existence as a whole — I would have been dependent on the telephone and the (ordinary) mail. Now, using the Internet and its winged-monkey messengers, I can search out ex-colleagues whom I haven’t laid eyes upon in twenty or twenty-five years, and leave messages for them that they can pick up in a spare moment without unduly interrupting their days.

You send these little notes out, and they work for you. I’m reminded of one of Jesus’ more obscure parables: “A man scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how” (Mark 4:26-27, New International Version).
